- What is 2D, 3D, and 4D ultrasound?
2D ultrasound works by using a transducer to send sound waves (high frequency sound waves) into the area being examined. The waves are reflected back to the transducer and recorded. This provides 2 dimensional, black and white images. 3D/4D is the most advanced technology used by sonographers during pregnancy to evaluate the unborn baby. This process provides the clearest images of the baby available. 3D ultrasound waves are directed from multiple angles. These waves are reflected back and captured, providing a detailed 3-dimensional image. 4D ultrasound is the process of streaming 3D images into live, real-time video of the baby. This allows you to see real-time motion. 3D/4D ultrasound imaging should utilize ultrasound energy subject to the same limits as conventional 2D ultrasound to create the 3 and 4 dimensional images. If the system is used only in the Obstetrics Application, the ultrasound energy is limited by the manufacturer below FDA limits for obstetrical ultrasound, whether scanning 2, 3 or 4 dimensionally. The FDA limit for obstetrical ultrasound is 94 mw,cm-2.
- Does this take the place of an ultrasound at my doctor’s office?
No. Your ultrasound at Heavenly Imaging DOES NOT REPLACE the ultrasound you receive from your prenatal care provider. We make sure that each of our clients is receiving prenatal care before doing an ultrasound. The ultrasound we provide is an elective, limited medical ultrasound and does NOT include a report.
- Is it safe?
Yes. This is the official statement from The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine: “No confirmed biological effects on patients or instrument operators caused by exposure at intensities typical of present diagnostic ultrasound equipment have ever been reported. Although the possibility exists that biological effects may be identified in the future, current data indicates that the benefits to patients outweigh the risk, if any, that may be present.” At Heavenly Imaging, we use state of the art ultrasound equipment in accordance with strict FDA guidelines.
- Who will perform my ultrasound?
Brenda Shafer RT, RDMS, RVT. She is the owner/operator of Heavenly Imaging. She has been doing ultrasound since 1980 and is registered in Ob/Gyn, Abd, Neuro and Vascular Ultrasound.
- Will insurance pay for my ultrasound?
No, 3D/4D sonograms are considered elective and do not replace the diagnostic ultrasound you have at your physician’s office.
- Does my doctor have to order this ultrasound?
No, but we advise our clients to be under the active care of a physician and that they are aware of the elective 3D/4D sonogram session you are planning to have.
- How long does the ultrasound take?
Anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the package you purchase.
- How many weeks gestation do I have to be to have an ultrasound?
You should be at least 19 weeks for gender determination. If you are going to have a 4D exam, you should be between 23 to 35 weeks.
- Do I need to have a full bladder?
No, but you do need to drink extra water for a few days before your ultrasound so you will be well hydrated. That will improve the clarity of your scan.
- Can I bring my family with me?
Yes, you may bring as many of your family and friends as you would like to enjoy this special occasion.
